Cubs' Bryant doing fine after illness, hit by pitch

Kris Bryant was back in the lineup Friday in Detroit after missing a start due to an illness, then getting hit by a pitch on the hand during a pinch-hit appearance against Cleveland on Wednesday.

Cubs manager David Ross said before the game Bryant did not get his hand checked out on the off day.

"We had something set up for him and he said he was fine," Ross said. "So all was good, he didn't need to have anything done."

Bryant hit a 2-run homer in the third inning and was also tasked with covering the oversized center field at Comerica Park.

Bryant hasn't started at his usual third base since April 20. He basically moved to left field when Joc Pederson went on the injured list and has since added center to his task list with both Ian Happ and Jake Marisnick out.

"He's got a lot of ground to cover," Ross said. "He's not been out there; probably play a little bit deeper, keep the ball in front of him. He's a guy that's still learning to get jumps, he's learning to read balls off the bat in center."
