Arrieta: Going on injured list was right move
Jake Arrieta explained the decision to go on the injured list Tuesday due to a cut on his right thumb.
"I threw a bullpen a couple days ago and just really wasn't able to apply the pressure necessary on really any of my pitches," he said. "If I can't do that, there's really no sense in going out there and putting my health even further at risk. If it were to reopen, then it just sets us back even further.
"I think it's definitely the right decision to miss one go-round through the rotation. The cut is closed up, the skin is starting to toughen, which is the primary concern and I don't see any reason why I shouldn't be able to throw a bullpen tomorrow, which is the plan."
Arrieta had his worst start of the season last Friday in Cincinnati, then pinch hit in Sunday's 1-run loss. Because of that pinch-hitting role, Arrieta can't come back from the 10-day injured list until the May 14 game in Detroit. The Cubs have three days off in the next eight days.
"The start in Cincinnati was rough," he said. "I tried to battle it out, I was adjusting the way I threw pretty much everything. It's the right way to go. Miss one and be back out there first game in Detroit."
