Naperville apartment uninhabitable after kitchen fire

A Naperville apartment was deemed uninhabitable after a Wednesday afternoon fire that started in the kitchen, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded about 12:15 p.m. to a three-story multifamily apartment building in the 1600 block of Country Lakes Drive, according to a news release from the Naperville Fire Department. Though smoke initially wasn't visible from outside the building, crews investigated further and found smoke coming from a first-floor unit.

Cooking was determined to be the cause of the blaze, which started on the stove and extended to the cabinets and microwave, officials said. The resident safely evacuated the building and activated the fire alarm to alert other occupants.

Naperville police assisted at the scene, and the Red Cross and building managers helped occupants find accommodations.
