Why I celebrate vaccination milestone

This week the Biden administration reached its goal of hitting 200 million vaccine doses in less than 100 days. We should all take a second to celebrate that, especially seniors like me who've been isolated from their families.

I'm a retired nurse and grandmother in my late 80s. Like many seniors, this past year was very lonely for me. I couldn't see my family even though they were just miles away. I missed a lot of milestones, and not seeing my grandchildren was devastating.

Right before the pandemic, I moved into senior housing, which was an adjustment for me because I worked until just a few years ago. I was used to being independent and keeping busy. I felt aimless in quarantine and sometimes wondered if this would ever end. I worried about getting sick and paying bills. When my husband died suddenly a few years ago, I was left with a lot of debt.

I felt relief when Biden was elected. With his stimulus checks, I did not have to watch my pennies. I used the money to buy groceries, medication, and to pay bills. I do not feel as stressed about life, and that's because of Biden's relief bill and vaccine rollout.

My family has been able to get vaccinated, and finally feel comfortable about coming to see me. For my part, I've never felt so much relief. After spending last summer alone in my apartment, this year, I am excited to know that I will be with my family, watching my great-grandkids play outside.
