Libertyville bank customer victim of attempted armed robbery

Libertyville police are looking for a man who showed a handgun and tried to rob a customer in the drive-through at Harris Bank downtown Friday morning.

The attempted armed robbery was unsuccessful and no injuries were reported. Area schools and some businesses were placed on a soft lockdown for about an hour beginning about 10 a.m. as police investigated at the bank, 354 N. Milwaukee Ave.

According to police, a man described as being 20 to 30 years old approached a vehicle in the drive-through, showed a gun and tried to take a bank deposit from the driver. The man left on foot, police said. He was described as being under 6 feet tall, about 160 pounds with a darker complexion.

He was last seen walking south from the area wearing a red shirt or sweatshirt, dark pants, a baseball hat and glasses.

Anyone with information is asked to call Libertyville police at (847) 362-8310.

Highland Middle and Rockland schools in Libertyville Elementary District 70 were put on soft lockdown because of police activity in the area. In a soft lockdown, students and staff move freely through the school but no one is allowed in or out of the building, and outside activities are canceled.

District 70 Superintendent Matt Barbini also asked for outside activities to be canceled at Adler Park, Butterfield and Copeland Manor schools, although people were allowed to enter and exit the schools freely.
