Mundelein theater team qualifies for virtual state drama competition

The Mundelein Theatre Group Interpretation team recently competed in the 2021 Illinois High School Association Drama and Group Interpretation Tournament. The contest was held virtually, with each team recording and submitting their entries.

The Mundelein Group Interpretation this year, "The Further Adventures of Nick Danger - Third Eye," placed second in their sectional competition and advanced to the state tournament.

Three performers were named to the All-Sectional cast: Will Gonzalez, Eli Walter and Kessler Young. The team did not advance to the final round at state, but four performers were named to the All-State cast: Madeline Demuth, Will Gonzales, Adriyanna Tesimu and Eli Walter.

Group Interpretation is a 30-minute, student-led performance of any literary work. The focal point of the performance is "out" to the audience, with limited onstage focus. The performance is minimal in nature, meaning that performers wear a uniform dress (not costumes) and build a minimalistic set.

Sound effects are permitted, but no lighting, specific costuming, properties or theater makeup can be used. It is an IHSA sanctioned event where schools compete against other schools with a chance to earn the opportunity to compete at a State Final tournament.

"The Further Adventures of Nick Danger - Third Eye" follows the story of fictional detective Nick Danger, created by the comedy troupe The Firesign Theatre. It is a parody of the hard-boiled detective story, and involves stereotypical film noir situations, including mistaken identity, betrayal and femme fatales.

The GI team was made up of Kai Ackerman, Madeline Demuth, Will Gonzalez, Megan Saunders, Adriyanna Tesimu, Zoe Van Krey, Eli Walters and Kessler Young.

Student assistants were Matthew Callas, Lance Evans and Mary McMurray. Mark Landuyt directed, with Sara Gunther as the associate director.
