Unemployment rates up in Chicago, suburbs

SPRINGFIELD - The number of jobs decreased in all 14 Illinois metropolitan areas in February, according to preliminary data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

The metro areas that had the largest over-the-year decreases in "nonfarm" jobs were the Chicago-Naperville-Arlington Heights region, down 330,200 jobs or -8.8%, and the Elgin region, down 21,000 jobs and -8.2%, the agencies said.

The unemployment rate rose in February in the Chicago-Naperville-Arlington Heights region by 5.1 points to 8.8%. The not seasonally adjusted Illinois unemployment rate was 7.8% in February.

"As expected, the global, national, and state impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are still very present and the effects continue to linger on the economy and the workforce," said Deputy Gov. Dan Hynes in a news release.
