True independence

The editors of the Daily Herald could not have been more wrong with their endorsements of the candidates for the Elgin City Council.

The incumbents have both voted against an ethics ordinance for our city. Do they have something to hide?

We know that one is a patronage employee of another government and the other incumbent just "goes with the flow" of a couple of other council members rather than showing clear thinking and independence. The other two candidates the paper endorsed appear to be focused on single issues. I don't believe either sees the big picture of how to move the city forward with a comprehensive, clearly thought-out strategic plan.

Of the remaining candidates, Karin Jones, Jerri McCue, and Jodi Perkins are truly independent and have their hearts in the community.

Their commonsense approach to problem solving would be refreshing on the council. As a lifelong resident of Elgin who knows the community, Steve Thoren would also be my choice. He too would be a productive, independent council person.
