Fire causes extensive damage to Lombard home
A fire left more than $100,000 in damage to a Lombard house late Monday night, authorities said.
Firefighters were called about 8:30 p.m. to the home on the 400 block of North Columbine Avenue.
The first firefighters to arrive found a large amount of fire on the south side of the house. The home's residents had escaped before their arrival.
The fire quickly spread to the attic due to high winds. Wind gusts topped 50 miles per hour at the DuPage Airport Monday night, according to the National Weather Service.
Lombard crews worked aggressively to extinguish the blaze and to keep it from spreading to a neighboring home, fire officials said in a news release.
"Crews on the scene did an outstanding job battling the intense fire, especially considering the wind conditions," Deputy Fire Chief Ray Kickert said in a statement.
The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes. The house was deemed uninhabitable.
Lombard firefighters were assisted by the Villa Park and Elmhurst fire departments, York Center and Addison fire protection districts as well as Lombard police.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
