Alzolay earns spot in Cubs' rotation with big finish

Through his first three Cactus League appearances, Adbert Alzolay did not look like he belonged in the Cubs' starting rotation this season.

It's never wise to put too much weight on spring training statistics, but Alzolay seemingly put himself in a bad spot after allowing 8 runs (7 earned) on 7 hits and 3 walks over 4 innings.

In the race for the Cubs' No. 5 starter's job, Alzolay was running behind Alec Mills and non-roster invite Shelby Miller.

Taking the ball against the a stacked Dodgers lineup Thursday, Alzolay turned on the jets and made quite the impression while allowing 2 runs on 1 hit and 1 walk to go with 5 strikeouts over 3⅔ innings.

"He's put in a lot of good work and it really showed," manager David Ross said. "He really had a great performance the other night against a really deep Dodgers world championship team and a lot of all-stars. He went in there and rolled through that lineup. That was impressive to see."

Rounding into form at just the right time helped the 26-year-old Alzolay win a rotation spot, and he'll likely start behind ace Kyle Hendricks, Jake Arrieta, Zach Davies and Trevor Williams.

"For me, there was only one goal which was first, make the team," Alzolay said. "Be a part of the Chicago Cubs' rotation. It's something that I've worked for. I've always maintained my focus and I've always had it on my mind since I finished the season last year and since I arrived at spring training."

Joining the Cubs in late August last season, Alzolay was 1-1 with a 2.95 ERA in 6 games (4 starts).

Throughout the spring, Ross noticed telling changes in Alzolay off the field.

"I've seen some definite maturity," the Cubs' manager said. "The conversations, the talk, asking the right questions, listening to the feedback and trying to implement that, I've seen a guy that's a lot freer walking around the clubhouse talking to everybody. The personality is out, who he is is really shining through.

"A lot of smiles just as he walks around but when he's on the mound he's doing work. He was extremely happy when I told him the good news. That makes me feel good."

There was more good news for Rex Brothers and Dillon Maples, who have won jobs in the Cubs' bullpen.

Infielder Matt Duffy joins Eric Sogard as a utility infielder, and the Cubs designated Ildemaro Vargas for assignment.
