Elmhurst police warn of ruse burglaries

The Elmhurst Police Department is warning residents of a ruse burglary involving a man posing as a plumber.

Valuables were recently stolen from a home on the 700 block of North Indiana Street, police said. About 2 p.m. Saturday, a resident answered her door and allowed a man posing as a plumber inside. While the resident was out of sight, the man took items from a bedroom.

The man was seen leaving in a red SUV and may have been accompanied by another man. The suspect was described as white or Hispanic with a mustache.

Residents are reminded that utility employees will wear uniforms, have identification cards or drive marked vehicles. Professional home repair services, such as plumbers or electricians, will not come to your home to perform work without a prior appointment.

Residents should call 911 to have police respond if they are approached by a person claiming to be a city employee or utility worker and ask for access to their home. Anyone with information regarding this ruse burglary should call police at (630) 530-3050.
