Asian American Community Members in Skokie Hold Vigils rally against for Atlanta Shooting.
North Suburban Community held a joint candlelight vigil on Sunday, March 21, 2021 Evening at the Laramie Park. While the messaging honored the Asian American women killed in Atlanta, the speakers also highlighted how this targeted racism is not new to the Asian community. The rally was organized and hosted by Khem Khoeun, Skokie Park District Vice President and MWRD Commissioner Josina Morita with the support of several social and humanitarian organizations Almost three hundred people showed up to "Stop Asian Hate" in Skokie.
The North Suburban Community from Chicago suburbs came together against hate crimes among Asian Americans, after multiple shootings in and around the Atlanta city killed eight people, among whom six were Asian women.
Attendees were asked to bring candles and posters to the event. The many protesters from around the Skokie and nearby towns and describing themselves as representatives of diverse and multi-faith Asian communities across the Skokie neighborhood Suburbs.
Numerous speakers shared and spoke about the feeling of sadness and worry over the community. Speakers include Khem Khoeun, Josina Morita, Denyse Wang Stoneback, Rev. Sung Yeon Choi Morrow, Ella Yoo and others.
A minute's silence had taken place for victims of Atlanta-area spas.
Anti-Asian hate crimes saw a surge over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. We condemn Hate and Violence Against Asian American. We've been attacked, blamed, scapegoated and harassed. We will be raising voice in the Illinois general assembly. We must cherish our common humanity as we live our lives. We must Praise that common humanity while we Commemorate in the distinctions that enrich our lives, enrich our communities. Speakers said.
Many Asians feel unsafe following the deadly shootings at Atlanta-area spas that left eight people killed including six Asian women. Join hands in the ally community and demand justice for all Humanity.
