Endorsements: Bass, Groenwald for Mount Prospect Library trustee

Three strong candidates are running for two 6-year terms on the Mount Prospect Library Board.

Two are incumbent trustees: Marie Bass, a retired executive director of a medical association who has been on the board for two years, and Kristine O'Sullivan, a communications manager who was appointed to the board last September.

The third is Rosemary Groenwald, a member of the library staff for more than three decades who will be retiring prior to the election.

To be sure, we have some concerns that Groenwald may be so close to the concerns of the staff that it would be hard for her to be objective about difficult issues that affect it.

At the same time, her detailed institutional knowledge, the part she has played in the library's growth over the years and her passion for its success are hard to ignore.

"My retirement offers me the opportunity to continue my connection with the library, albeit in a different role," she says.

We think Groenwald should be given that chance, and we endorse her candidacy.

We also endorse Bass, who has demonstrated a solid arms-length view of the library's strengths and its future opportunities. Her experience makes her well qualified to work on the strategic planning needed to further evolve library services into the future with a focus on equity and inclusion.

Sullivan also offers strong credentials and a commitment to the library as a pillar of the community. We have nothing ill to say about her candidacy.

Voters have three good candidates to consider. We hope all three continue their involvement with the library, win or lose.
