On being American

On Saturday, March 6, on the Opinion Page, Mari MacGregor wrote one of the finest opinions the Herald has ever printed. It was obviously written from the heart and once again in my opinion relates what many of us have tried to say perhaps poorly for so many years now. If any of your readers have ever had the chance to travel outside the United States, for the most part you will find out you are not Irish, German, English, Italian or whatever other country's native son you think you are.

I stood on the Great Wall of China some 25 years ago with several visitors from other countries. We were dressed much the same. I was not wearing a Cubs cap or a Bears jersey. Yet, the locals swarmed me, even a group of military officers asking to have their photo with me. I asked them who they thought I was. They said simply I was an American.
