Elgin Kiwanis start endowed memorial scholarship with ECC Foundation
The Kiwanis Club of Elgin has established a new endowed scholarship with the Elgin Community College Foundation that will distribute $400 or more annually to a student (or students) who demonstrates exceptional community service and/or involvement.
The new scholarship fund, entitled the "Kiwanis Club of Elgin Memorial Scholarship" will memorialize former club and community members who have made a significant impact on the Elgin area.
As part of the celebration of its 100th year of service to the children of the world and the community, the club has incorporated making monthly (service or monetary) contributions to Elgin-based organizations.
These monthly gifts, combined with the club's annual benevolent grants averaging over $20,000 per year, continue its efforts to support the needs of youth while promoting Kiwanis International's and the local club's youth focused efforts.
The new scholarship fund was one such annual benevolent grants.
The Elgin club, which was chartered in 1920 shortly after World War I, continues its tradition of supporting international efforts to eliminate iodine deficiency, maternal neonatal tetanus and conduct neuroscience research. As a result of these and many other efforts the club has contributed well over one million dollars in addition to many hours of labor in support of local organizations.
