Boys soccer: Hersey shuts out Prospect for 2nd win

Hersey is off to a flying start to the 2021 spring boys soccer season following its 2-0 victory over host Prospect Thursday night at George Gattas Memorial Stadium in Mount Prospect.

Goals from Anthony Scafidi and Patryk Bujak in the first quarter hour of play would be all the Huskies (2-0-0) would need to help coach Mike Rusniak's team earn six points in the first week of the campaign.

"We played a very good first half, but you could see our play drop off a little at the start of the second half," said Rusniak, whose team won its season opener 4-0 over Schaumburg.

"It's still a work in progress but if we play with confidence, and continue to trust each other, we'll see improved play from here on out."

Scafidi would strike early when the junior finished in close just three minutes into the Mid-Suburban East contest, and after a nicely delivered corner from Ronan Wilcox sailed to the back post, Nathan Solarski kept things alive long enough for Bujak to score his third of the year at 11 minutes.

"A couple of early lapses cost us in that first half, but we came out and played with more energy and purpose after the break to give us a chance, which was very encouraging," said Prospect coach Mike Andrews, whose team fell to 0-1-1.

The visitors had a couple of opportunities to add to their advantage, the first coming when Bujak ran onto a long throw from Wilcox, and another moments later, this time with Wilcox going close, only to have Knights keeper Alejando Rider-Leiner making the save.

The home side nearly halved the Huskies' lead four minutes after the break when John Wilkins forced keeper Reese Delahanty to make the stop.

Later, Hersey center-back Thomas Steger defended a dangerous opportunity up the left side from Wilkins to end a potential attempt on goal.
