Open Communities to hold March workshops

Throughout March, Open Communities will hold workshops to educate landlords, tenants. Real estate professionals and anyone else interested in fair housing. Due to Covid-19, all of the events will be held via Zoom, and participants must register to receive the link. March workshops include:

Fair Housing 101 - Wednesday, March 10

Knowing your rights is the first step to defending yourself from housing discrimination. Join us to learn more about fair housing. This online workshop will cover the protected classes under the federal, state, and local fair housing laws. It will also explain reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities, dealing with tenants who require service animals, who is liable under the Fair Housing Act, and how fair housing laws are enforced.

Housing for Those Who Are 55+ - Thursday, March 11 and Friday, March 26

This workshop will provide education on housing options and industry updates to allow those 55 and older to age in place. It will cover reverse mortgages and refinance options, rental education, property tax exemptions, and delinquency prevention.

Tenant Training - Friday, March 12 and Thursday, March 18

This workshop will educate tenants on self-advocacy tips, lease options, selecting a rental, and financial sustainability. This workshop will focus on overcoming potential renting barriers and helping participants prepare for sustainable housing. It will educate tenants going through an eviction on their rights and remedies, teach tenants how to develop a positive rental relationship with their landlord, and provide financial education to tenants preparing for homeownership.

Financial Capabilities - Friday, March 19

Learn the financial steps to reach your financial goal. This workshop is geared toward communities in Cook and Lake County, Illinois. This workshop will educate individuals on reaching their short vs. long-term goals, maximizing income, budgeting, emergency funds, investment types, banking options, and retirement. It will also educate single families and married couples on financial planning, goal setting, and income maximization.

Avoid Foreclosure Workshop - Thursday, March 25

This workshop educates homeowners about the various options available to assist them in avoiding foreclosure. It will cover information on the foreclosure process, how to adapt financially, adjust/restructure your budget, and keep the lines of communication open with your lender to protect your home and prevent foreclosure. This workshop also provides current homeowners with the education and guidance to rebuild their credit and prepare for life after foreclosure.
