Lake Zurich police officer wins prestigious award from law enforcement academy

Lake Zurich police Officer Zachary Panik has won the prestigious George P. Graves Award, designating him as the top recruit in his graduating class at Suburban Law Enforcement Academy.

Panik graduated Feb. 26 from the 14-week program at the College of DuPage. The program uses both classroom and practical training to prepare recruits to successfully pass the Basic Law Enforcement Officers certification examination.

This award is named after retired Downers Grove Police Chief George Graves, who was instrumental in creating the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy over 25 years ago. The award is voted on by the members of the class and reads, "for the integrity, dedication, and ethical attitude demonstrated during the past 14 weeks, traits which exemplify law enforcement professionals."

Panik fulfilled the role of drill and ceremony leader for the class and received a certificate of appreciation from the academy director for his assistance.
