Endorsement: Jackson for Glendale Heights village president

Linda Jackson, the longest-serving village president in Glendale Heights history, is seeking a sixth full term. And if she wins, she promises it will be her last.

But she's being challenged by two opponents - Edward Pope and Michael Ontiveroz - who say the time for change is now.

Ontiveroz is a political newcomer who says people in the community want new leadership. If elected, he says he will seek to reduce or eliminate certain fees for residents and businesses struggling from the pandemic.

Pope, who is a former village trustee, says he would create a multicultural board of residents to look at issues in the community. He also would examine the possibility of reducing fees and eliminating vehicle stickers.

Jackson, who was appointed as acting mayor in 1999 and was first elected to the position in 2001, has provided quiet leadership through the years. Most recently, the village has faced challenges because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, Jackson says the budget is in good shape and the staff has worked to provide needed services to the community. The village also has sought to improve its transparency and communication with residents.

Jackson said there are certain projects that had to be put on hold because of the pandemic. She said she would like to see them completed.

She should be given that opportunity. Jackson is endorsed.
