Judson University to host Race and Justice Series

Judson University's Chapel Ministry will feature a series titled "Race and Justice" to highlight the importance of diversity and Black History Month within the Judson community.

The series will commence virtually at 10 a.m. on Friday, Monday, and Wednesday, Feb. 19, 22, and 24.

Featured speakers will include Rondell Trevino, Pastor Peter Hong, and author Edward Gilbreath.

The series begins with the Friday, Feb. 19, chapel featuring Rondell Trevino of the Immigration Coalition.

Rondell became an expert on immigration issues when he sought to have his wife, Laura, immigrate from El Salvador after she had studied for a year in Memphis. After working as a pastoral resident at Fellowship Memphis Church, Rondell began working for the Evangelical Immigration Table and National Immigration Forum, where he trained churches, businesses, and law enforcement on immigration from a Biblical perspective and immigration throughout the Southeast. He launched the Immigration Coalition in 2017 in partnership with churches, organizations, and people of goodwill around the United States. The Immigration Coalition is a non-profit organization providing clean drinking water to Latino, Immigrant, and Migrant communities along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Pastor Peter Hong of New Community Church Chicago, a multi-ethnic urban church, will speak at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 22. Pastor Hong planted New Community in 2002 in partnership with the Evangelical Covenant Church. Since arriving in the United States at the age of 10, Pastor Hong has lived most of his life Chicago. He earned a Master of Divinity and a Master of Theology from Trinity International University and has devoted his life to preaching Jesus as the goal of all of life and planting multicultural churches in a major urban city.

Alumnus and author Edward Gilbreath will speak on Wednesday, Feb. 24, where he will explore "The Relevance of MLK's message in 2021."

Gilbreath is an award-winning journalist and author, and currently serves as an executive editor at InterVarsity Press. His books include "Reconciliation Blues: A Black Evangelical's Inside View of White Christianity" and "Birmingham Revolution: Martin Luther King Jr.'s Epic Challenge to the Church." He has served previously as the executive director of communications for the Evangelical Covenant Church, an editor of numerous magazines at Christianity Today, and the founding editor of Urban Ministries Inc.'s UrbanFaith.com. He currently serves as Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at Christianity Today.

Judson University brings together students of various backgrounds in a Christ-centered and biblically-based community. With a commitment to diversity and social engagement, the Race and Justice series is one way for Judson's Chapel series to engage current issues of race relations in light of the gospel.
