Covered bridge over troubled choices

This was the ultimate in "We told you so."

Hint to Long Grove leaders too stubborn to realize the historic bridge needs to be put to pasture: Move the bridge to the park as a beautiful canopy for customers to walk under - not run into. I'll kick in the first $100 to start the efforts.

Who really believed that a small sign saying "No Buses or Trucks" would prevent someone from wedging another yellow bus in the covered bridge? Really?

We all are suckers for nostalgic buildings, cities, movies and music.

Unfortunately, the Village of Long Grove's nostalgic covered bridge has for too long been treated like a pop star diva that has lost her charm. If Long Grove really wants to bring back customers and commerce, then take the roof off the bridge, move it to the park next door and turn it into a fun pavilion to walk under, not drive under.

The bridge is pretty, it's old, it's charming - we get it. But the sight of abandoned store fronts, empty sidewalks and tumbleweed blowing in the streets is not charming. There are only so many roads leading into the village and this bridge prevents easier, quicker access for spontaneous visits, pick up dinner, wine, candy, gifts, whatever. And it's one lane.

Long Grove has too long held onto the notion that this bridge is somehow the cornerstone to the allure of the village. Sorry, but right now, it's a bridge over troubled choices.
