Cubs, Williams reportedly agree on one-year deal
Designated for assignment by the Pirates in November, starting pitcher Trevor Williams has reportedly agreed to a one-year contract with the Cubs for an estimated $2.5 million, pending a physical.
Over the past five seasons with Pittsburgh, the 28-year-old righty was 31-37 with a 4.43 ERA.
Williams was 14-10 with a 3.11 ERA in 2018, but he's slipped the past two years and was 2-8 with a 6.18 ERA in 11 starts with the Pirates last season.
After trading ace Yu Darvish to the Padres and losing Jon Lester, Jose Quintana and Tyler Chatwood in free agency, the Cubs need help in the rotation.
Kyle Hendricks is the No. 1 starter and is likely to be followed by Zach Davies, who was acquired from San Diego in the Darvish deal.
Alec Mills is currently slotted as the No. 3 starter.
In 13 careers games (11 starts) against the Cubs, Williams was 4-7 with a 5.67 ERA. He's 2-6 with a 7.09 ERA in 8 games (7 starts) at Wrigley Field.
