Bono saves late penalty as Sevilla beats Alavés 2-1

MADRID (AP) - Goalkeeper Yassine 'œBono'ť Bounou saved a penalty kick in stoppage time as Sevilla held on to its lead for a 2-1 win over Alavés in the Spanish league on Tuesday.

Bono dived to his left to stop Joselu's attempt, with the win lifting Sevilla into fourth place on 33 points. Julen Lopetegui's team is one point behind third-place Barcelona, and one point ahead of Villarreal in fifth.

Youssef En-Nesyri opened the scoring for Sevilla only three minutes into the match after a cross by Jesús Navas from the right. Édgar Méndez equalized for the hosts with a header less than 10 minutes later off a throw-in into the area.

Jesús 'œSuso'ť Fernández netted what proved to be the winner with a powerful long-range shot into the top corner in the 30th.

Bono stopped Joselu's low shot after a penalty had been awarded for a handball.

Sevilla, which had a goal disallowed by video review late in the second half, was without central defender Diego Carlos after he tested positive for the coronavirus.

Atlético Madrid leads the league with 41 points, four more than Real Madrid and seven more than Barcelona. Diego Simeone's team has two games in hand compared to its closest rivals.

VALLADOLID LEAVES IT LATE

Joaquín Fernández scored an 89th-minute equalizer as Valladolid rallied from two goals down at halftime to draw 2-2 with visiting Elche in a match between relegation-threatened clubs.

Elche, winless in 12 straight league games, took a 2-0 lead with goals from Josan Ferrández in the ninth and 43rd minutes. Míchel Herrero started Valladolid's comeback in the 71st.

Valladolid's Roque Mesa was sent off in stoppage time for complaining after having already been substituted.

Valladolid, which has only one win in its last six league matches, is in 16th place, two points ahead of Elche inside the relegation zone.
