76-year-old man killed in Waukegan fire identified

A 76-year-old man who was killed Monday in a fire in Waukegan was identified as Zeferino Hernandez-Martinez, officials said.

Around 5:15 p.m., the Waukegan Fire Department responded to the fire on the 10th floor of a 12-story apartment building at 542 Washington St. The crews were able to contain the fire to a single unit, but Hernandez-Martinez was found dead at the scene.

The preliminary autopsy results show Hernandez-Martinez died from severe burns, according to a news release from the Lake County coroner's office. The blaze remains under investigation.
