Batavia United Way invites community to join the 21-Week Equity Challenge

Batavia United Way, in association with 43 other local United Ways across the state, is joining the United Way of Illinois in encouraging Illinois residents to engage in a 21-week program engaging in racial equity activities to gain a deeper understanding of the impact systemic racism and inequity have on the state and in local communities.

"The Batavia community is full of allies and individuals who want to help. One of the first steps to bringing about action is getting a better understanding of the issues at hand Batavia United Way is very excited to participate in this unique opportunity to educate and encourage meaningful conversations on equity and racism, and we hope others consider joining us to do so," said Bonnie Baumgartner, executive director of Batavia United Way.

Chris Lowe, president of the Batavia Community Diversity Initiative, welcomes this project.

"I believe education and communication are key components in creating a more inclusive and just society. That is why I have signed up for and am encouraging Batavia CDI members to participate in the United Way of Illinois 21-week Equity Challenge. I look forward to partnering with our local Batavia United Way to begin these important conversations in our community."

How can you partner with the Batavia United Way?

Join the Challenge! It is a free 21-week program that runs from Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (Jan 18, 2021) to Juneteenth (June 19, 2021).

Spend about 15 minutes per week learning more about building a stronger, more equitable community through readings, videos, and questions to provoke conversations.

The 21 Week Equity Challenge encourages individuals, families, friends, and co-workers to have racial equity conversations to gain a deeper understanding about the impact systemic racism and inequality have on the state and in the local communities.
