Elgin history buffs to get a taste of local lore

Upcoming local history programs will tempt even the most seasoned history seekers.

Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin will present "Bet You Didn't Know This About Elgin History" from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14.

Elgin historian Jerry Turnquist for the Elgin History Museum will reveal little-know oddities about Elgin, such as unusual weather events and famous people who have visited the city.

Local historian Linda Rock will present "Elgin: How Sweet It Is" at 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11.

She will talk about candy, popcorn and ice cream that was made in homes and factories in Elgin. Virtually taste sweet treats from ice cream to popcorn stands and various candies made in Elgin.

Never outdone by Chicago's candy producers, Elgin was a manufacturer of sweets and treats for many years.

Both programs are virtual and require registration.
