'Snow-proof' visors for traffic signals coming in Lake County

"Snow-proof" visors are being installed on red lights at all 176 Lake County-owned traffic signals to improve visibility. The modified attachment, which forms a complete circle around the light and extends about a foot, is meant to solve the problem of blowing, heavy snow covering red lights. LED bulbs used on almost all traffic signals throughout Illinois cut energy costs and last longer but generate less heat and have trouble melting snow and ice. Lake County is installing the visors only on red signals but if effective will consider them for green and yellow lights going forward. Access to an app for local traffic information is available at lakecountypassage.com.
