Williams will be missed
We will sorely miss the logic and common sense approach to subjects, especially in education, that Walter Williams expressed in his column. Thank you, Thomas Sowell, for your tribute to Mr. Williams. For years, my dear friend and I (both retired educators) have shared his column. She lives in Florida and we see the column on different days ... one of us calling the other to discuss, agree or disagree with his perspective and lament the lack of progress we are making in education.
Education is the absolute foundation of this country, and, with some fundamental changes, could make a true difference in so many of the inequities that our society now faces. Mr. Williams understood that at the core of education is the willingness to learn and that poor behavior in the classroom by the few disrupts the learning for the majority of students and should not be tolerated, by the educational system or the parents.
His historical perspective and his high standards will be missed. I only wish he could have had the media platform that so many extremists on either side of any issue are afforded. He tried to make a difference. Goodbye, Walter Williams.
