Plan to replace Sears store with apartments gets OK from Aurora City Council

The Aurora City Council has given the go-ahead to a plan to build apartment buildings on the former Sears site at Fox Valley Mall.

The council voted unanimously Nov. 24 to rezone the site, and allow three buildings, each three stories tall. They would contain a total of 304 studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments.

The store would be razed to make way for the buildings, plus a new entrance to the main mall building.

Sears was an original anchor store when the mall opened in 1975. It closed in September 2018.

The site's owner, Centennial Real Estate, plans to tear down the store in early 2021. Centennial owns most of the mall, except the JCPenney and Macy's department stores.
