Legislators' sacrifice
So I see the legislature has decided to call off the veto session. Good for them. Better safe than sorry. The fact that the state is in a pandemic, is billions in the hole and faces an unprecedented budget crises is immaterial to the safety of our elected representatives.
As Veterans Day just passed, their courage reminds me of the late great senator from Illinois, Paul Douglas. He was an elected politician, but when World War II came, he resigned and became the oldest Marine recruit in corps history, managing to use his clout to actually fight and get wounded in the South Pacific.
Our current elected officials show the same Profiles in Courage. While ordinary people struggle with the virus, while nurses, doctors, grocery workers, police and firemfighters are necessary workers and show up every day, our politicians show how unnecessary they really are. Their sacrifice is outstanding. I bet they gave up their per diem, but not their pension.
