SW Indiana police fatally shoot armed man in home's backyard

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Evansville police officers fatally shot an armed man in the southwestern Indiana city after police said the man failed to comply with officers' orders and pointed his gun at them.

Officers were called to a residential backyard around 8:30 p.m. Sunday after a woman called 911 and told dispatchers that an armed man was in her yard, had threatened to shoot her dog and had pointed a firearm at her, the Evansville Courier & Press reported.

The Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office said 33-year-old Rodriguez D. Pam of Evansville died at the scene.

When officers arrived there, they fired at Pam after he refused to comply with commands and pointed a gun toward officers, Evansville Police Department spokesman Sgt. Nick Winsett said.

Officers do not believe that the woman who called 911 knew the man, police said.
