Fire damages two houses in Elgin's Edgewater neighborhood

No one was injured in a fire Wednesday night in the Edgewater by Del Webb neighborhood in Elgin that caused more than $450,000 in damage to two house, fire officials said Thursday.

Members of the Elgin Fire Department responded to the 2700 block of Beacon Point Circle for a report of a house fire just before 11 p.m.

Firefighters found a one-story house with fire burning through the roof and exposing a second, detached house next door to heat and flames. Fire crews deployed multiple hand lines to extinguish the fire, which was brought under control approximately 50 minutes after their arrival.

Both houses were occupied at the time of the fire, but all the occupants escaped before the fire department's arrival. No firefighters were reported injured.

Both houses suffered extensive damage and have been red-tagged and boarded up for safety, according to a news release from the Elgin Fire Department. Initial damage estimates to the houses and contents are in excess of $350,000 for the primary residence and $100,000 for the neighboring exposed house.

The Elgin Fire Department Fire Investigators are continuing their investigation.
