EXCHANGE-REMEMBERING DAUGHTER

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. - Barbara Brown doesn't want people to forget about her daughter. It's why, for the past year, she has spent most of her time cleaning the building on the corner of 25th and Lincoln Avenue in East St. Louis, the former home and office space of her late daughter Charmaine Savage. Now, a year-long effort she spearheaded to get that portion of Lincoln Avenue renamed in her daughter's honor is complete. East St. Louis City Council voted last month to rename Lincoln Avenue, from 21st Street to 25th Street, 'œCharmaine Y. Savage Place.'ť That's because she dedicated her life to promoting positive images of her hometown through I Am East St. Louis, The Magazine. By Deasia Paige. UPCOMING: 1,270 words, photos.

EXCHANGE-COMMUJNITY MEALS

CARBONDALE, Ill. - If there's anything that can bring a wide array of people together, despite varying religious beliefs, political affiliations or backgrounds, it is food. Through local outreach programs to feed those in need and fundraising events based on community food celebrations, the volunteers who work to organize, cook, and deliver food, as well as the recipients of the meals prepared therein, all benefit from our society's shared desire to enjoy a delicious meal. The owners of two southern Illinois restaurants recently came together in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to aid in feeding at-risk groups in the community at a time when an already food-insecure region was facing unemployment, lost wages, and school closures.
