After 20 years, Oberhelman's career still evolving

Dave Oberhelman joined the Daily Herald in 1999.

After 20 years covering primarily high school sports in DuPage County, he was selected in May 2020 to serve as a writer for the Daily Herald's new weekly publications the Glenview Herald and the Northbrook Herald.

In that capacity, he covers everything from high school athletics and village board meetings to personal profiles and community activities.

Before joining the Daily Herald full-time, Oberhelman wrote for such publications as the Chicago Tribune, The Chicago Reader and Windy City Sports Magazine and served in editorial positions for community newspapers in Chicago when cut-and-paste meant literally that.

Highlights have included covering each of now-closed Driscoll Catholic's state-record seven straight state football titles; earning a 2008 Recognition Award by the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association for his coverage; and helping cover Chicago Blackhawks' Winter Classic games at Wrigley Field and Soldier Field.

A lover of music and film, Oberhelman is married and a father of two, raised and still residing in Wheaton. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Indiana University.
