Glad I answered the door

It was a weeknight in August 2018 when the door bell rang. I was greeted with a smile from a woman who introduced herself as Terra Costa Howard, candidate for State Representative for the 48th District.

I was impressed a candidate running for office was knocking doors, introducing herself, and asking what the biggest issues were to my family and me.

Terra and I talked on my front steps for 30 minutes. She shared her vision for the state. I was struck at how sincere she was. She wasn't in a hurry to ask me for my vote so she could knock the next door. She genuinely cared about my concerns.

Let me be clear. I did not know Terra prior to the evening she knocked on my door. As a matter of fact, I hadn't even heard of her name, but answering my door that August evening not only introduced me to my eventual state representative, but allowed my wife and me to establish a new friendship.

In the election season we are inundated with political literature that distorts the character of Terra Costa Howard. We hear from her opponent how she turned her back on her constituents. I am certain I can speak for anyone who has met Terra at the door. She is authentic, she is passionate, and she shares the values of her district.

I don't expect to agree with any candidate on every decision they make, but knowing Terra as I do today, I am certain she is basing her votes on what she feels is in the best interest of her district.

Who would have thought answering my door two years ago would have energized me to speak so profoundly about a woman I am proud to call my friend today.
