Naperville interior designer wins industry award

Joan Kaufman, design director of Interior Planning & Design Inc. of Naperville, has been named the winner of the 2020 ASID Celebration of Design and Design Excellence Award for Universal Design.

A panel of distinguished interior design professionals from ASID chapters across the country reviewed entries and selected category winners based on lighting, scale and proportion, color and composition, design creativity, function and solutions appropriate to the design criteria, said ASID Illinois Chapter president Annemarie Del Monico.

Kaufman's entry was a remodeled suburban Chicago home she designed to look beautiful without anyone realizing it has universal access, designed to fully accommodate a family with a wheelchair-bound son. The home is now "user-friendly" and generates a warm feeling of inclusivity for family and friends.

"We are pleased and proud to receive this prestigious ASID award and thrilled we were able to help our clients by designing a space that is not only beautiful but also provides accessibility as well as design features that enhance their day to day living," she said.
