Golf outing helps kids battling cancer find hope through art

Palatine-based Mandy's Foundation recently held its inaugural golf outing at Glendale Lakes Golf Club in Glendale Heights. With the overwhelming support of its corporate sponsors, as well as those who participated, the event was a great success.

Created in 2019 by Adam Wilk, Mandy's Foundation was established to provide positive experiences for children who are hospitalized during cancer treatment.

"Upon receiving the news that my sister was to undergo cancer treatment, I felt that I needed to do something" said Wilk. "I got with my sister, Mandy, and began the process of defining what that something would be."

They finally settled on making an impact in pediatric cancer therapy.

"The proceeds from our golf outing will provide assistance to the pediatric art program at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital," said Erica Wilk, marketing director of Mandy's Foundation.

"As an elementary school teacher, it's Mandy's vision to provide a light to children who are fighting this fight. Through painting, drawing, sculpting and other creative outlets, art therapy services help to provide special care for children with cancer."

Although 2020 provided its fair share of adversity, the Mandy's Foundation team was able to accommodate guidance provided by the CDC, as well as local and state governments.

"This event has seen its fair share of challenges," said Ryan Smith, director of events and engagement. "Navigating the uncertainty of COVID-19 while maintaining a fun and safe event was our ultimate goal."

"We've learned a lot through the entire process and are looking forward to future events. After our first event, we already have people approaching us to partner with their event so their proceeds go to Mandy's vision," said Kyle Haight, director of development.

"We are certainly excited for what the future has for Mandy's Foundation."
