Bicyclist in fatal Libertyville accident identified as Mundelein man

A bicyclist who died after being struck by a vehicle early Sunday in Libertyville has been identified as Timothy Bowes, of Mundelein.

Lake County Coroner Howard Cooper said preliminary autopsy results showed Bowes, 60, died from injuries due to blunt-force trauma.

Libertyville police were called to the area of Route 176 and Stritch Drive, which is on the south side of University of St. Mary of the Lake seminary, about 3:25 a.m. for a report of an accident involving a vehicle and a bicyclist.

Police said they found the man later identified as Bowes on the roadway. He was reported to be conscious and alert when he was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center.

Cooper said his office was notified at 6:32 a.m. and responded to Advocate Condell for a death investigation. Cooper said the investigation by his office, with Libertyville police and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team, continues.

"We have been in close contact with Mr. Bowes' families, and our deepest condolences go out to them during this difficult time," Cooper said in a news release. "This is truly a tragedy."

Stritch Drive is an entrance to the campus and the Cardinal Stritch Retreat House. The North Shore Bike Path is just south of Route 176.

More details, including possible tickets or charges, were not released by Libertyville police.
