Anderson Animal Shelter to host in-person adoption event Oct. 3

On Saturday, Oct. 3, Anderson Animal Shelter will host its first in-person adoption event since the COVID-19 pandemic began. On Adoptable animals will be stationed at Gerald Subaru of North Aurora from 9 a.m. to noon along with volunteers ready to help pets find their forever homes.

Puppies, kittens and dogs will be available for viewing throughout the dealership as part of the "Subaru Loves Pets" initiative. Puppy and kitten areas will be spread throughout the indoor portion of Gerald Subaru, while visitors can view older dogs outside.

All animals present that day are available for immediate adoption. Since Anderson can't bring every shelter pet to the event, volunteers will be walking around the dealership with iPads, ready to show visitors all the adoptable animals at Anderson's three locations in North Aurora, Bloomingdale and South Elgin.

Masks are required at the event and Anderson is limiting the number of people who can view an animal to one person or one family at a time.

Anderson Animal Shelter takes in homeless pets of all ages and conditions. Cheryl Greenspan, Director of Marketing for Anderson Animal Shelter, said the Oct. 3 event will feature a variety of animals and will spotlight some of the shelter's harder to adopt pets, which include senior pets or pets that require more care, medication or have health conditions.

Greenspan said Anderson is grateful to Gerald Subaru of North Aurora and the American Society of Prevention to Cruelty of Animals (ASPCA) for making this event possible and helping to bring the joy of pet ownership to more people. Gerald will be giving away portable water bowls and balls to encourage you and your new pet to explore outdoors together.

"Adoptions have been going through the roof since the start of the pandemic. Now that people are spending more time at home, they're seeing all the good animals can do for you," said Greenspan.

Anderson provides care for more than 7,000 homeless pets and orphaned and injured wild animals each year. Many of Anderson's programs are provided free to the community or are deeply discounted, and are funded through donations, which Greenspan said have been down across Illinois shelters in recent months. The upcoming adoption event also provides visitors with the opportunity to donate to the shelter's largest fundraising event, Walk4Animals. This year's virtual event kicked off on June 10 and ends Oct. 10. Those interested can register to walk or donate while visiting the dealership on Oct. 3.
