Child, man found dead in fire died from gunshots

GLENDALE HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) - A child and a man found dead after a suburban Chicago condominium was engulfed by flames died from gunshot wounds to the head, the DuPage County coroner reported Thursday.

Coroner Richard Jorgensen said he has not yet ruled if each death is considered a homicide or suicide.

Police and fire officials haven't revealed the circumstances leading to the Aug. 24 fire at the Waters Edge condominium complex in Glendale Heights. Four-year-old Salman Khan and Shafath Khan, 46, were found dead after the second-floor fire was extinguished.

Glendale Heights police said responding officers learned three people were on the second floor, where the fire broke out, and rushed to the unit, where they rescued a 6-year-old with minor injuries. The officers entered the home building again, but were unable to enter the unit due to the heat and smoke.

Police said the investigation into the two deaths is ongoing. Deputy Chief Brandon Oliver said there is 'œno threat to the community.'ť
