18-year-old charged in shooting death of Chicago activist
CHICAGO (AP) - A young Chicago activist who opposed police in the city's schools was shot to death earlier this year by a friend who was firing at a passing vehicle, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Genove Martin is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Caleb Reed, 17. Cook County Circuit Judge John Lyke said during the bond hearing he didn't believe prosecutors can obtain a conviction with the evidence presented during the hearing, but ordered Martin, 18, held in lieu of $300,000 bond.
Surveillance video show Martin, Reed and two others were walking along a street on July 31 when an auto passed them and stopped nearby, prosecutors said. Reed allegedly pulled a gun and fired at the auto and he and the others ran before an occupant of the auto returned fire. Prosecutors say video shows Martin firing behind him, striking Reed in the head.
Reed, who was active with the anti-violence group Good Kids Mad City and VOYCE, a group opposed to police officers being stationed in city schools, was pronounced dead two days later
A public defender told Lyke his client was on the way to college when the shooting occurred, adding had he made it there it ``could have changed his life.'Å¥
