Jackson State won't renew football coach's contract

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Jackson State has decided to not renew football coach John Hendrick's contract.

Hendrick took over as JSU's interim coach in 2018 and was named to the post full time last season. In a news release Monday, Jackson State Athletic Director Ashley Robinson said the decision to let Hendrick go was in the best interest of the program and the university. He thanked Hendrick for his leadership and wished him success in the future.

The Tigers went 6-9 overall and 5-5 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference in the 2019-20 season. In 2018-19, the Tigers were 4-8 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

Assistant coaches T.C. Taylor and Otis Riddley have been retained and named interim coaches until a replacement can be hired, The Clarion Ledger reported.

Jackson State is not scheduled to play football in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. JSU football will play a spring schedule in 2021, with six regular season games starting Feb. 27 against Mississippi Valley State.
