Dion: Trump is not Satan, only incompetent

By Marc Munroe Dion

Creamsicle-colored Pres. Donald J. Trump uses more makeup and hairspray than my wife, but he is not Satan.

I dislike the man intensely, and I hate watching him bull his way through what may be this nation's last presidential election, but I do not believe he is pure evil.

It might be easier if he were. He would lose the election, and his character would be written out of future episodes.

In a recent speech, former First Lady Michelle Obama put her finger on it when she said Trump is in over his head.

Whatever he thought the presidency would be, that is not what it turned out be. He is the Kardashian president, someone with a personal life of great luxury but doesn't know how to do anything.

The people who voted for him know how to do a great many things. They are the people we called "the salt of the earth," back when people said those kinds of rootsy things, back before you could buy a house without a down payment.

No. Trump isn't evil, but he isn't salt of the earth, either.

The saddest thing about Trump is that this is the best he can do.

The most terrifying thing about Trump is that he's trying as hard as he can.

He is so far from knowing how bad he is at the job that he thinks he's good at the job.

He just can't do any better.

And all of us who have worked for a living know there are jobs we better not talk our way into, because we will never learn to do that job, and we will be fired. Then we will go home to tell our husband/wife that we have been fired, and, if we are not nice people, we will tell husband/wife that we were fired, not because we couldn't do the job but because of "office politics."

There is a reason I became a writer and not a professional boxer.

I fooled around in boxing gyms for a number of years, working the bags, shadowboxing and getting punched in the face by men who were better boxers than I could ever be, no matter how many times I hit the heavy bag.

I got a certain amount of satisfaction out of my boxing days, and I stayed in shape, but I learned very quickly that I cannot fight in a ring, not in any recognized amateur or professional capacity. I'm not good enough. I am millions of miles from not good enough. Some boxers are hard to hit. I was hard to watch.

Trump cannot do the job. The laziest, most ignorant, most ethically corroded state representative in all the land could do a better job of being president than Donald Trump because that state representative has at least some idea of what the job really is -- and what it is not. I've watched mangy little state reps rise to an occasion, and save their district from unwanted development, or waddle bulldog-like into a legislative fight and come home with enough money to build a new high school. Their people applauded the little representative then, and went back to ignoring him/her, which is as it should be, now and forever in the small places where a little high school is a big deal.

I'm going to type it again because I think it's important.

This is the best Donald Trump can do.
