Police: Teen charged after crashing stolen car, killing passenger
A 15-year-old Waukegan boy faces reckless homicide and other charges after police say he crashed a stolen car late Sunday night, killing his 14-year-old passenger.
According to Waukegan police, officers were called to the 100 block of North Jackson Street about 11:30 p.m. Sunday on a report of a serious crash. They arrived to find a black Nissan sedan that had crashed into a fence and a utility pole and a 14-year-old boy lying in the parkway, with a 15-year-old boy trying to help him.
The older boy initially told officers he and the second teem were walking along Jackson Street when the car hit them. However, police said further investigation determined that the teens found the Nissan running in a nearby driveway, stole it and later crashed, throwing the younger boy from the vehicle.
The 14-year old was taken to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries, police said. The 15-year-old is in custody at the Depke Juvenile Complex Center in Vernon Hills and charged with reckless homicide, theft of a motor vehicle, and criminal trespass to motor vehicle, police said.
