Cubs place Bryant on 10-day injured list

The Cubs placed third baseman Kris Bryant on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Aug. 19, before Saturday's game with the White Sox.

There's been talk about Bryant suffering from a left wrist injury, but the official news release said the reason for the injured list visit is a left ring finger sprain. Either way, the injuries occurred when Bryant dove for a fly ball in left field during a game in Cleveland on Aug. 12 and his glove hand rolled awkwardly on the ground.

Bryant has been struggling at the plate all season, batting .177 with 2 home runs. He hit a home run in Cleveland on the day the injury happened, but after that went 2-for-16 in the next four games he played.

He missed two games, then returned to action, but received a medical injection in the left wrist on Tuesday and the Cubs said that would keep him out at least two days.

Cubs manager David Ross gave an update on Bryant's condition before the Cubs decided to put him on the injured list.

"He's still day-to-day, he's got some activities ahead of him with the trainers," Ross said. "He took some light swings in the cage (Friday). I believe it was just with a fungo. That's it, just some fungo swings, just easing his way into it."

Ross was asked if the injured list was a possibility and he said that wasn't the plan at the moment. The Cubs did not immediately make a corresponding roster addition to match Bryant's trip to the IL.

David Bote continued to start at third base in Bryant's absence.
