Police: Alcohol a possible factor in fatal Waukegan crash
Waukegan police say alcohol may have played a part in a crash that killed a Waukegan woman Thursday night.
Police said the woman, who was in her 20s, was a front-seat passenger in a 2008 red Dodge hatchback that crossed the centerline on southbound Lewis Avenue near Brookside Avenue and struck a 2011 black Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling north about 11 p.m.
The passenger was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The driver was also rushed to the hospital with severe but not life-threatening injuries.
Police said early indicators point toward alcohol as a possible contributor to the crash.
No charges have yet been filed against the driver, a Waukegan woman in her 30s, police said.
Lake County Coroner Howard Cooper has scheduled an autopsy for Monday.
The identity of the victim will be released once the autopsy has been completed and her family has been notified.
The driver of the Jeep, a man in his 20s, was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. His 4-year-old son was a passenger but was not injured.
