Carpentersville seeks volunteers to serve on boards and commissions

The Village of Carpentersville is seeking residents interested in serving on various boards and commissions.

Each commission consists of members appointed by the village president and confirmed by the board of trustees.

Business Development Commission (2 vacancies):

The Business Development Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the village president and board of trustees, and assists the director of community development by reviewing and making recommendations on the following issues: programs that both revitalize existing businesses while attracting new businesses to the commercial and industrial zoning districts; commercial site selection; and standards for use in evaluating the economic impact of proposed or expanding businesses. The Business Development Commission also works collaboratively with existing business associations within the village. Meetings are generally held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m.

Parks and Special Events Commission (6 vacancies):

The Parks and Special Events Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the village president and board of trustees in addition to village staff in the planning, scheduling, and organizing of community events within the village. Meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

Police Pension Board (1 vacancy):

Pursuant to state statute, the village has established a police pension fund for the benefit of its police officers and of their surviving spouses, children, and certain other dependents. A 5-member Police Pension Board administers the pension fund for the village within the guidelines of state and local laws. Meetings are generally held the third Tuesday of January, April, July, and October at 10:30 a.m.

Board of Police and Fire Commissioners (rolling applications):

The board of fire and police commissioners for the village shall consist of three members to be appointed by the president of the village with the consent of the trustees. The board shall conduct examinations for applications for a position in the police and fire departments of the village and shall appoint sworn police officers and firefighters. Meetings are generally held the second Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m.

Planning and Zoning Commission (rolling applications):

The Planning and Zoning Commission conducts public hearings on all zoning matters, reviews subdivisions and other land use plans, and maintains the village's comprehensive plan. Recommendations on all matters, except certain types of variations, are forwarded to the village board for final consideration. Meeting are generally the third Thursday of the month at 7 p.m.

In order to be eligible to apply for one of the positions, you must be a village of Carpentersville resident for at least one year (or in the case of the Business Development Commission, an owner of a business within village limits), be able to commit to making a majority of the meetings, and have both the interest and qualifications needed to be a valuable asset to the commission.
