7 residents safe after Naperville grill fire extends to house

Seven occupants of a Naperville house escaped safely early Tuesday after their home caught fire, authorities said.

One firefighter sustained minor injuries while fighting the blaze on the 300 block of South Julian Street near downtown, the Naperville Fire Department said in a news release. The firefighter was treated at Edward Hospital in Naperville and released.

A resident called the fire department about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday reporting a fire at the house, authorities said. The response drew 24 firefighters and 10 emergency vehicles.

The first crews on the scene saw smoke and fire coming from a deck and extending into the attic. Investigators later determined the cause of the fire to be accidental, spreading from an outdoor grill.

After putting out the visible fire, crews searched the interior of the house and extinguished a hidden fire in the attic.
