Unequal treatment

As Allies for racial equality and justice, we are called to recognize and stand against racism in all forms. For far too long, BIPOC and women have been held to a double standard of behavior. BIPOC and women are not forgiven for their mistakes and are too often the targets of horrific disrespect and abuse when they show their humanity through imperfection.

We recently saw this in our community when a young minority candidate made a social media comment that suggested she condoned violence. The candidate immediately recognized the mistake, apologized and ended her candidacy. Even after taking responsibility, she received over 500 abusive, racist, misogynistic public and private threats. She was told "We know where your parents live. We know where you live. We know everything" among other threats of violence and death.

By comparison, two DuĀPage County Board members - both seasoned veterans of public service and both white men - recently made mistakes regarding unprofessional and disrespectful communication with the public. Both men were called out, but, to our knowledge, neither received a single threat. They were also treated to a strong public show of support from their friends, colleagues and the Republican Party, and both continue to hold their respective offices. Very different outcomes for very similar situations.

As a community, and as Allies, we are called to stand against this abuse. As Allies, we recognize that dehumanizing and aggressive language towards BIPOC and women has historically resulted in violence.

As Allies, we will not stand by silently or hide behind our privilege. As Allies, we strongly condemn this brutal harassment and pledge to advocate for BIPOC candidates. As Allies, we challenge our entire community to help make Lombard and all of DuPage County a better, more inclusive place for everyone.
