Springbrook and Naperbrook golf courses to host fall tournaments

Golf is a sport that can be played safely under COVID-19 restrictions, and Springbrook and Naperbrook golf courses have seen play increase significantly in 2020.

Although tournaments scheduled for spring and early summer were cancelled, the courses are able to host several tournaments from late August to mid-November.

"Since May 29, when Illinois moved into Phase 3, our courses have seen an over 20% increase in rounds compared to same period of 2019," said Naperville Park District Director of Golf Kevin Carlson. "We've also seen high levels of participation in our junior programs, camps, clinics and leagues. We are looking forward to our Senior Amateur and both the Senior and Fall Scrambles beginning later this month. Some changes to the events were required to remain within current guidance, such as field size, but we expect participants will still enjoy the chance for some competition."

The 2020 Senior Amateur Championship will be held at both Springbrook and Naperbrook Golf Courses on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 19-20. Reservations currently are full for this tournament, which is an 18-hole event, with each flight playing 18 holes at one course. Flights are determined by age (Seniors are ages 55-69 and Legends are ages 70 or over). The overall low gross score of the Senior flight will be declared the Naperville Senior Amateur Champion. Tournament sponsors are McAlister's Deli and Sharko's BBQ.

Naperbrook Golf Course will host the Senior Fall Scramble on Thursday, Sept. 3, for any amateur golfer 55 years of age or older with an official USGA handicap. The format is a four-person scramble, and players may register individually or as a team, either online, by mail, fax or in person at Springbrook or Naperbrook Golf Course.

The registration deadline is Aug. 27. The tournament sponsor is Aurelio's Pizza.

The Fall Scramble will take place at Springbrook Golf Course on Saturday, Oct. 10. It is open to any amateur golfer age 18 years of age or older with an official USGA handicap.

The registration deadline is Sunday, Oct. 4, for either individuals or teams of four. This tournament is sponsored by Belgio's Catering.

The final event of the golf season is the Turkey Shoot, held at both Springbrook and Naperbrook on Nov. 21-22.

A fun tradition, this five-person scramble is held in all kinds of weather, which in the past has included rain, cold and snow. All participants receive a turkey, and the group with the lowest score for the day will get the biggest birds. As part of the tradition of the Turkey Shoot, players who do not wish to receive a turkey may donate the value of the turkey to a local charitable organization.

The Naperville Park District has selected Operation Support Our Troops - a Naperville-based organization - to be the beneficiary of donations from the 2020 Turkey Shoot event at Springbrook and Naperbrook Golf Courses. Participants may elect to donate the monetary equivalent of their prize turkey that will be forwarded on to this cause that supports "the morale and well-being of American forces by providing comfort, resources and education to them and their families."

Sponsors of the 2020 Turkey Shoot include Sharko's BBQ, Belgio's Catering and Jewel-Osco. Jewel-Osco is donating the prize turkeys.
